An annular eclipse passed over parts of the Northern Hemisphere today (June 10), and transformed the Sun into a “Ring of Fire”. Although the phenomenon is well understood by scientists, the eclipse’s arrival prompted many claims of Biblical prophecy unfolding. Passages in Christian scripture speak of signs in the heavens and the Earth in the End Times – and some believe today’s eclipse fit the bill.

Solar eclipse: When is the next one?

As the Moon passed in front of the Sun, it was farther away than usual and, consequently, appeared a smidge smaller.

The apparent change in size was enough to create the Ring of Fire effect.

Unlike a total eclipse of the Sun, when the Moon completely blots out the star, a fiery ring of the solar disc highlights the Moon during an annular eclipse.

Some Christian evangelists and doomsday preachers, however, believe something far more sinister was at play today.

Paul Begley, a Christian evangelist and online personality from West Lafayette in Indiana, US, believes the eclipse was a prophetic sign from God Himself.

Pastor Begley runs a weekly TV show, The Coming Apocalypse, where he draws links between Bible prophecy and everyday events.

Solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, earthquakes, asteroid flybys, political unrest – he believes these are all signs of Jesus Christ’s pending return.

In a recent live broadcast on YouTube, he bizarrely claimed today’s spectacle was but one of many prophetic eclipses in recent years.

He said: “You guys remember we had that first solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, that started in Salem, Oregon, and ended in Salem, South Carolina, and on its way down that path crossed seven cities named Salem.

“And the word Salem means Jeru-salem. That’s what they’re named after, Jeru-salem.

Revelation 12 sign, which was on September 23, 2017. Do you remember that?

“Very important – this was crossing the Great American Eclipse.

“Now we’re having this eclipse. It’s in the halfway point between the next eclipse, which will not happen until April 8, 2024, and that will also cross America.”

Pastor Begley went on to say “weird stuff” will be going on during that eclipse as it will pass over a region in the state of Illinois called Little Egypt.

He believes the area is full of witchcraft and may even be some sort of “portal” he intends to investigate.

The firebrand preacher said: “I should probably be there that day with a camera, not just to see the eclipse, but to find out what’s going on around it.

“It is the Rapture? Some think it could be the Rapture. It’s seven years in between.

“I don’t think so, but definitely a prophetic sign, definitely.”

He cited a passage from the Book of Genesis, which reads: “And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years.'”

These “signs” he believes, are solar and lunar eclipses which happen multiple times a year.

Solar eclipses also appear to be mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 24, which describes the days before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

The scripture reads: “Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.”

Of course, there is no evidence to suggest, any of this will come to pass and solar eclipses have been occurring for billions of years.

Eclipses are simply the byproduct of the Earth and the Moon’s orbit of the Sun.

They happen between two and five times a year and astronomers can predict their date for many years into the future, which takes some of the mystery out of the spectacle.

NASA said: “On average, the same spot on Earth only gets to see a solar eclipse for a few minutes about every 375 years.”
