¡¡¡¡Cyberpunk 2077 is continuing its plan of not just fixing the game, but adding on actual new content at some point, and now it¡¯s appointed someone to be in charge of that phase of release.
¡¡¡¡That would be new game director Gabriel Amatangelo, who is taking over for Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, who has left the studio entirely. CDPR has seen many departures lately, not unusual for the finale of a huge project like Cyberpunk, though a few have been mildly eyebrow-raising all the same.
¡¡¡¡Amatangelo has been with CDPR since January 2020, but before that he was best known for working at BioWare on Dragon Age Inquisition content, particularly the well-received Trespasser DLC, which many players believe was better than most content in the base game. Previously, he also designed expansions for the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.
¡¡¡¡As of right now, we have two main plans for Cyberpunk DLC, though both remain somewhat nebulous at the moment.
¡¡¡¡The first is the current roadmap that says we are going to get free DLC on the scale of The Witcher 3¡¯s free DLC in the first half of 2021. The obvious problem there is that the first half of 2021 is nearly over, and we haven¡¯t heard word one about any of that yet. The free DLC was already pushed back from ¡°early 2021¡± due to the amount of fixes the core game needed. The leaks we¡¯ve heard make players believe we¡¯ll be getting things like new Cyberware, weapons, clothes, cars, possibly a new skill tree, and some short, Gig-like quests. All of which would correspond with Witcher 3-type free DLC, which was on the smaller side.
¡¡¡¡After that, however, CDPR has reiterated they still have plans for larger Blood and Wine-style DLC, though that will likely not arrive until at least 2022, again a delayed schedule from The Witcher. The only thing that¡¯s supposed to happen with Cyberpunk this year besides free DLC is the PS5 and Xbox Series X version of the game being released.
¡¡¡¡MORE FOR YOU
¡¡¡¡CDPR hasn¡¯t said a word about the presumably paid, much more meaty DLC that may be coming in the future. We have no idea if it will mirror The Witcher 3¡¯s exactly (a large DLC and then an extremely large DLC), but suffice to say, the expectations are pretty high for its scope. There are many, many potential places the DLC could go, and it¡¯s possible some of it could be based on cut content from the base game that didn¡¯t make it in over this long production process. It also remains to be seen how exactly it would work with the way the game sets up V¡¯s story with its ¡°point of no return¡± ending and everything you have to do ahead of that. I suppose the DLC could be standalone, set in the world of Cyberpunk but free of the Johnny/V storyline, but we¡¯ll see.
¡¡¡¡I will play actual Cyberpunk DLC when it¡¯s here, because I¡¯ve been looking for an excuse to go back to the game that isn¡¯t just ¡°the cops don¡¯t spawn four feet in front of you anymore,¡± which is essentially the most substantive change we¡¯ve seen to gameplay since release, as everything else is bug fixes and performance increases. No word on the free DLC yet, but we¡¯ll see if we start hearing directly from Amatangelo himself soon here, now that he has his new role.
